How to Get a Virtual Number for Telegram Verification

· 5 min read

Telegram asks for a phone number at registration and again when you log in on a new device. A virtual number works for both — you receive the SMS code, copy it into Telegram, and that is all Telegram ever sees. The number does not need to be active after that initial verification unless you are signing in somewhere new.

Which country should you use?

Telegram accepts numbers from virtually every country. In practice, a US (+1) or UK (+44) number has the best delivery rate because Telegram has high user density in those markets and rarely flags those number ranges. If you already have a preferred country — for example because you want the account to appear tied to a specific region — that country works too.

For users in Nigeria, Ghana, or Kenya a local number (your own country code) is fine. Telegram does not restrict by region; it only needs a number that can receive SMS.

How to verify Telegram with a virtual number

  1. Find a number on Simvo. Go to Telegram numbers, pick a country, and note the price. The number is reserved the moment you buy it — you have a window (shown on your dashboard) to receive the code before the rental expires.
  2. Open Telegram and enter the number. Use the full international format including the country code — Telegram's own field includes the dial code selector, so just enter the digits.
  3. Tap Send Code. Telegram sends an SMS to the number. On your Simvo dashboard the code appears as soon as it arrives, with a sound alert. Copy it and enter it in Telegram.
  4. Done. Telegram account is created. You can add a username and a separate password (2FA) right away — these are worth setting, since they protect the account if someone tries to recover it via the same number later.

Telegram vs. WhatsApp: what is different for virtual numbers?

WhatsApp is stricter. It actively checks whether a number has been used before and rejects numbers from certain ranges it classifies as VoIP. Telegram does not apply the same check — a fresh number that has never been used for Telegram before will work without issues. This makes Telegram one of the more reliable apps to verify with a virtual number.

What if the code doesn't arrive?

Telegram tries SMS first; if it fails it may offer a voice call instead. Virtual numbers on Simvo support SMS delivery only, so if Telegram switches to a voice fallback, the code will not arrive. In that case:

  • Wait for Telegram's retry timer to reset (usually one minute) and request the code again — a second SMS attempt usually succeeds even when the first timed out.
  • If still nothing after two attempts, cancel the rental on Simvo — you will receive a full refund — and try a different country or provider.

Simvo refunds automatically when no code arrives. You only pay for a number that delivers.

Creating a Telegram channel or bot with a virtual number

Telegram channels, bots, and groups are all tied to a single Telegram account, which is tied to a single phone number. If you want a dedicated account for a bot or a channel separate from your personal account, a virtual number is the standard way to register a second Telegram account without needing a second SIM card.

Once the channel or bot is created you can transfer admin rights to another account and leave the original. The phone number is not needed again unless someone tries to recover the account via SMS.
