How to Verify PayPal with a Virtual Phone Number
· 5 min read
PayPal uses phone numbers for two things: confirming your identity when you create or recover an account, and as a two-factor authentication (2FA) channel. A virtual number may receive an initial confirmation SMS if PayPal accepts the number. Access duration matters if you are setting up an account for the long term.
Does PayPal accept virtual numbers?
Acceptance depends on PayPal and the account. A listing on Simvo does not guarantee that PayPal will accept the number or complete account verification. Follow PayPal’s eligibility and account rules.
The situation changes for 2FA. PayPal's Two-Step Verification, when enabled, sends a code every time you log in. A virtual OTP number is a one-time rental and expires after the verification window — it will not receive future login codes. If you enable 2FA on PayPal, you need a number that stays active: either your real number, a long-term virtual rental, or an authenticator app (which PayPal also supports as a 2FA method and does not require a phone number at all).
Which country number works best for PayPal?
PayPal is available in most countries but has different feature sets by region. If you want full PayPal functionality — sending, receiving, and withdrawing to a bank — the number should match the country your PayPal account is registered in, because PayPal links account features to the country, not just to the phone number.
Choose a country consistent with your account and PayPal’s requirements. Country options may include:
- US (+1) — check current stock and observed delivery history
- UK (+44) — check current stock and observed delivery history
- Nigeria (+234) — availability does not change account-level restrictions
Step-by-step: verify PayPal with a virtual number
- Get the number first. On Simvo, go to PayPal numbers, pick your country, and complete the purchase. The number appears on your dashboard with a countdown.
- Start the PayPal registration. Enter the virtual number in PayPal's phone field, including the country code. Click Send Code.
- Copy the code from Simvo. The 6-digit code appears on your dashboard if PayPal sends it. Enter it in PayPal.
- Complete account setup. Once verified, add your bank or card details. If PayPal asks you to confirm the phone number again for 2FA, either use your real number at that step or choose the authenticator app option instead.
What if PayPal says the number is already in use?
PayPal rejects numbers that are associated with an existing account. Virtual numbers are sometimes reused across providers, so a number you purchase may have been used before. If you see this message:
- For an eligible one-time order without a code, request a wallet refund under the refund policy. Limits and review holds can apply.
- Purchase a new number (from the same or a different country).
- If the error persists across multiple attempts, try a different country — some number ranges are more commonly pre-used than others.
PayPal and long-term number access
If your use case requires the number to remain reachable (for password resets, account recovery, or 2FA), look at number rentals rather than a one-time OTP purchase. A rental provides access for the plan’s stated period, if available. Follow-up messages depend on platform acceptance. Same-number renewal is not guaranteed.
