How to Get a Virtual Phone Number for Instagram Verification
· 5 min read
Instagram uses phone numbers for two things: account verification when you sign up or recover access, and two-factor authentication (2FA) for ongoing security. A virtual number handles both — it receives an SMS code just like any other phone, without needing a SIM card or revealing your personal number.
When Instagram asks for a phone number
Instagram prompts for phone verification in a few situations:
- When creating a new account
- When you've been logged out and are trying to regain access
- When Instagram triggers a security check on your account
- When you choose SMS as your two-factor authentication method
In each case, Instagram sends a 6-digit code via SMS. A virtual number can receive that code the same way a mobile number does.
Step-by-step: verify Instagram with a virtual number
- On Instagram, reach the phone verification screen. This might be during signup, account recovery, or in Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication.
- Purchase a virtual number for Instagram on Simvo. A US (+1) number is among the most reliable for Instagram. See Instagram numbers on Simvo for live pricing and available countries.
- Enter the number on Instagram (with the country dial code) and request the SMS code.
- Open your Simvo dashboard. The 6-digit code appears as soon as Instagram sends it.
- Enter the code on Instagram. Verification is complete.
Which country to choose
Instagram accepts phone numbers from most countries. A US or UK number tends to have the highest success rate because Instagram's delivery is more reliable to those ranges. Your account isn't restricted to any particular country — the number is only used for the code, not to determine where your account is based.
Using a virtual number for Instagram 2FA
If you're adding a phone number as your two-factor authentication method, keep in mind that you'll need to use a virtual number again if Instagram ever asks you to re-verify. For 2FA on an account you use long-term, an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy) is generally more reliable than SMS — it doesn't depend on a number being available when you need to log in. Use the virtual number to complete the initial verification, then switch to an authenticator app if Instagram offers the option.
What if the code doesn't arrive?
Instagram occasionally throttles SMS delivery to certain number ranges. If the code doesn't appear in your Simvo dashboard within a couple of minutes, cancel the number (you'll receive a full refund automatically) and try a number from a different country. Sometimes requesting the code again after switching countries resolves it immediately.

Does Instagram block virtual numbers?
Instagram does attempt to detect and block some virtual number ranges, particularly on accounts it considers high-risk. Standard virtual numbers work in most cases. If a standard number is rejected, a Premium Non-VoIP number — drawn from a real carrier allocation — passes the checks that flag typical virtual lines.
