Virtual Numbers
Temporary vs Long-Term Virtual Numbers
· 5 min read
Not every virtual number is meant to be used the same way. The distinction that actually matters isn't the technology — it's how long you need to keep the number, because that determines what kind of product you should be buying.
A temporary, single-use number
This is the default case, and it covers most verification needs: you need one code, once, to finish signing up or logging into something. The number is reserved for that single purpose and released once the code arrives (or once you cancel it, if nothing came through). There's nothing to manage afterward — no renewal, nothing to remember to cancel.
Most account verifications fit this pattern. WhatsApp, Instagram, and most one-off signups only ever send you one code that matters.
A number you keep for longer
Some situations genuinely call for holding onto the same number for an extended period — multi-step verification flows that text you more than once, or an account that periodically re-verifies by SMS. For that, a longer-held number (rather than a fresh single-use one each time) is the more sensible product, since it keeps the same number active across multiple messages instead of buying a new one for each.
Whether this option is currently available, and its pricing, is shown live on the rental page — it's worth checking there directly rather than assuming, since availability depends on live supply.
Which one do you actually need?
- One code, one time (most signups, most password resets) — a single-use number.
- Testing or QA where you need a working number for a short session but don't know exactly how many codes you'll receive — check current options on rental plans.
- An account you'll need to re-verify periodically — a longer-held number, where available, avoids repurchasing each time.
